Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp gave a touching compliment to Lionel Messi, who led the team to a dramatic come-from-behind victory over Egypt in the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

After the match, Messi could not hide his tears. Klopp said the tears were not just because Argentina advanced to the quarterfinals, but because he felt the meaning of another historic moment he created for his country.

According to [Inside Reality Football], Klopp said.

"She was looking at another magical moment that she had created for the Argentine national team. She didn't just cry because she won. She shed tears because she made a historic reversal for her country in the World Cup."

Klopp said Messi, who still creates emotion on the best stage, especially at the age of 39, came to be even more special.

"It is touching and heartbreaking to see Messi shedding tears after the match. No player in the world soccer at this age has shown such performance."

He then emphasized Messi's status in football history once again. He said his performance against Egypt proved again why Messi is a special player.

"Now I have to admit one thing. Messi is, and is, the greatest footballer in the history of the sport."

Messi played some ups and downs on the day, but as a result, he created one of the best matches representing this tournament.

In the first half, he missed a penalty kick and even hit the post with a free kick himself. However, he played a key role in leading the team to come from behind in the second half.

In the 79th minute of the second half, he helped Christian Romero's chasing goal with an accurate cross, and four minutes later, he scored an equalizer himself to bring the game to square one 2-2.

And in second-half stoppage time, Argentina won a dramatic upset as Enso Fernandes finished with a header from Lautaro Martinez's cross from the right.

Defending champion Argentina advanced to the quarterfinals with the win, and the next opponent is Switzerland.
